🏞️ Exploring Mawlynnong – Asia’s Cleanest Village Hidden in Meghalaya
🌿 A Village That Redefined Cleanliness
I had read about Mawlynnong before — often praised as Asia’s cleanest village — but nothing prepared me for the beauty, discipline, and warmth this place exuded. Located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, close to the Bangladesh border, this village is a lesson in sustainable living and community pride.
🚗 How to Reach Mawlynnong
- Nearest Airport: Shillong (SHL), about 90 km away. Guwahati (GAU) is a better-connected option, around 190 km.
- By Road: I hired a cab from Shillong, and the scenic journey took around 3 hours. Roads are mostly smooth, with misty valleys along the way.
🌳 The Vibe & First Impressions
As I stepped into Mawlynnong, I was welcomed by cobbled pathways lined with bamboo dustbins, hand-crafted huts, and lush green gardens in every yard. No plastic, no litter. Even the tiniest alley was spotless. This isn’t just for tourists — the villagers take pride in maintaining this standard every day.
🌉 What to See & Do in Mawlynnong
1. Living Root Bridge (Riwai)
A short walk from Mawlynnong takes you to the famous single-decker living root bridge in Riwai. It’s a natural wonder formed over decades by intertwining roots of rubber trees. Early morning is the best time to visit to avoid crowds and soak in the serenity.
2. Sky Walk Viewpoint
This bamboo watchtower rises above the tree canopy and offers a panoramic view of the Bangladesh plains below. It’s rustic, but worth every step for the breathtaking scenery.
3. The Church of the Epiphany
Built over a century ago, this quiet little church sits right at the heart of the village. With its well-kept garden and stained-glass windows, it feels like a postcard from another era.
4. Explore Khasi Culture
Talk to the locals (mostly Khasi tribe), observe their matrilineal society, and try traditional dishes like Jadoh (rice cooked with meat) at local homestays.
💸 Budget Guide (2025 Estimates)
- Stay: ₹1000–₹1800 per night at homestays
- Food: ₹250–₹350 per meal at local eateries
- Transport: ₹5000 for a full-day cab from Shillong (shared cabs also available)
⭐ My Personal Tips
- Carry cash — digital payments are limited in remote villages.
- Wear comfy shoes for walking to viewpoints and bridges.
- Don’t forget to visit nearby Dawki River (for crystal-clear water boating!)
